HISTORY
PROACTIVE COMMUNITY SERVICES (PCS) is a 501(C) (3) African American led community-based organization (CBO) located in Olympia Field, Illinois serving at-risk intergenerational African Americans/Blacks and Communities of Color. The geographic area PCS serves is composed of 27 communities in the economically and ethnically diverse Southern Cook County of Illinois. The organization was founded February 2005 by Ms Eula Burge, an African American woman, who saw the need to close the widening social service gaps and health disparities that severely affected African Americans communities in Illinois’ south suburbs and beyond. Ms Burge has personally experienced the challenges of navigating the often complex healthcare and social service system and seen the devastating impact of fragmented healthcare and social services on the lives of family members and friends.
PCS' overarching aim is to improve Health and social inequities of disadvantage and underserved individuals and families in Southern Cook County Illinois and beyond. The agency has consciously strengthened its capacity to implement integrated and diverse projects to provide seamless service delivery during its years of existence. At the core is a diverse board of directors and executive team committed to building a strong management structure through implementing organizational goals for continued growth.
PCS overarching goals are to: 1) promote chronic disease prevention and healthy lifestyles through programs that provide access to education, information, prevention, early intervention, treatment, and support; 2) provide HIV/AIDS programs; 3) provide access to programs that assist with maintaining economic self-sufficiency to prevent, reduce, or eliminate dependency; and 4) provide programs that build assets and strengthen an individual’s ability to reduce risky behaviors and improve life outcomes.
PCS service delivery is comprehensive and coupled with a vision that empowers minorities adversely impacted by health and social disparities. We continue to expand, develop, and integrate services to better address such concerns and serve as a catalyst for building stronger and more vibrant communities.
Clients are served through partnerships, collaborations, and constant dialogue with those served. The agency enjoys a special relationship with the high-risk population served and is able to incorporate client preferences into community services that appeal to them, including addressing barriers that prevent access to appropriate care and information.
The agency staff and board collectively have over 150 years extensive expertise in successful developing and implementing prevention programs and services to some of the highest-risk populations in communities that suffers vastly from some of society’s worst social ills and socio-economic status.
